As well as picking the colour of your frames, you match the colour of the lens so you can adjust for various fashion styles. Increasingly more young, stylish and edgy glasses wearers are trying Transitions lenses. And they love them. With seven Transitions Signature colours to choose from – including four bold Transitions style colours – wearers can now pair lens colours and frames to create their own bold and individualised look.
They darken and lighten to varying degrees depending on the brand, even with temperature, and some don’t darken as well inside cars. Originally glass lenses were the only material choice, and grey lenses the only colour in the 1960s. Transitions brought the first plastic transitions lens to market in 1991, and 2020 will see the 8th generation of continuous performance improvement.
Generation 8 lenses get darker and become clear again quicker — three minutes less for fade back than Transitions Signature lenses with Chromea7 technology and 30 per cent less time for the lenses to activate.
The earliest glass photochromic lenses relied on silver chloride or silver halide to react to UV light and darken. Today’s photochromic lenses use proprietary dyes in the surface layer that undergo chemical changes that darken the lenses when exposed to UV light.
You often wear just these and don’t have to carry a clear and a sunglass pair with you.
Anti-reflection coating (also called AR coating or hard-multi-coating) is a microscopically thin multilayer coating that eliminates reflections. Lens coatings are treatments to aid the performance, durability and appearance of spectacle lenses.
Hard microscopic layers protect against scratches. Lens coatings can filter for blue UV light offering more protection, reduce fogging and aid cleaning.
